Opening a gate with a phone — what are the options?

A phone can reduce the need for another remote, but the key question is how the gate controller accepts a command.

In short

Gate Auto Open triggers the configured channel: a phone call to a GSM module or a saved SUPLA/HTTP/HTTPS action.

Terms used in the app

Gate
The gate point and its saved control method: GSM phone call, SUPLA direct link or another HTTP/HTTPS link.
Opening method
The channel used to send a command to the existing gate controller. Location logic decides when; the opening method decides how.
Phone readiness
A panel that checks background location, Bluetooth, notifications and battery settings required by the selected setup.

The phone controls an interface, not the gate motor directly

Gate Auto Open does not replace the gate control board. The installation needs an existing remote-control interface that can accept a phone or internet command. You select that method at the Gate point and the location logic decides when it should be triggered.

The normal remote can remain in use. The app adds another control and automation channel rather than replacing the complete gate installation.

GSM phone call

For a GSM gate module that opens after a call from an authorised number, enter the full number including country code. When the automation conditions are met, the app initiates the call. This method is simple and the gate module does not need home internet.

Before automating it, call the module manually and make sure the input performs the intended action. A dedicated OPEN input is more predictable than a step-by-step OPEN → STOP → CLOSE input.

SUPLA — direct link

Compatible SUPLA controllers can be triggered through a direct link created in SUPLA Cloud. The phone can use 4G/5G and does not need to be on the home Wi‑Fi. Where possible, grant the link only the Open action.

Treat the direct link like a digital key. Do not publish it, and run the test only when you are prepared for the gate to move.

Other HTTP/HTTPS link

If a controller, Home Assistant or your own service exposes an endpoint/webhook, choose Other internet link. Gate Auto Open supports HTTP and HTTPS with Automatic, GET or POST. Automatic uses POST for recognised Home Assistant links and GET for other links.

Prefer HTTPS for any service reachable over the internet. Plain HTTP is appropriate only for a deliberately controlled local or test environment.

Test the control method before the route automation

First test the selected Opening method from the Gate settings. Only after it works reliably should you tune GPS wake-ups and Opening zones. This separates controller problems from location problems and makes troubleshooting much faster.

Key points

  • Identify whether your controller supports GSM, SUPLA or HTTP/HTTPS.
  • Use a full international number for GSM and test it manually first.
  • Treat SUPLA and webhook URLs as secrets.
  • Prefer a dedicated OPEN command over a step-cycle OPEN/STOP/CLOSE input where possible.
  • Test the control method separately before enabling arrival/departure automation.

Common questions

Does Gate Auto Open work with every gate?

Not directly. The gate needs a controllable interface such as GSM, a compatible SUPLA direct link or an HTTP/HTTPS endpoint.

Will my normal remote stop working?

No. In a normal installation the remote remains independent and Gate Auto Open adds another control path.

Does the phone need home Wi‑Fi?

Not for GSM or an internet-accessible SUPLA direct link. For HTTP/HTTPS it depends on where your endpoint is reachable.

Can the Test button really open the gate?

Yes. It sends a real command, so use it deliberately and preferably while you are at the gate.

Which method is best?

The method your existing controller supports reliably. The location automation is independent and simply triggers that method at the right time.
